Shadowserver is formally granted Federal 501(c)(3) non-profit status

I am very pleased and proud to announce that The Shadowserver Foundation has formally been granted US Federal approval as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization (NPO). Additionally, we have been officially designated as a public charity eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions from the general public, government agencies, corporations, private foundations, or other public charities to further our efforts and public services.

This is an important step for Shadowserver, as it allows to us formally demonstrate our commitment to providing research, data and reports in a manner that is not profit or revenue based, but solely for the purpose of better safeguarding the internet. Many of you already know that we freely provide reports and data to ISPs, hosting providers, and other organizations that directly own or control network space.

Shadowserver engages in many collaborative efforts with various groups and organizations. These collaborations are typically in the areas of joint research and data exchange. Since Shadowserver is a non-profit, vendor-neutral organization, a significant number of organizations pursue these efforts with Shadowserver as they know that we are not competing with them or seeking to affect their business model. Additionally, this collaboration allows Shadowserver to further its own data collection, aggregation, and reporting activities, thus providing richer, more comprehensive data sets for the benefit of the general Internet community.

As a formal 501(c)(3) organization, we hope to further develop our services and research for the public's benefit. We also look to the community for support, suggestions, and collaborative opportunities. We wish to thank our current partners and contributors for their assistance, as they have played a large role in helping us get to this point. We will soon be adding more information to our web site about our partners and sponsors, as well as updated information on our own efforts and areas of research.

This has been a long and somewhat arduous process for us as we needed to demonstrate that we in fact do not charge any fees for our efforts. We also needed to demonstrate that as a public charity, we are committed to continuing our research and reporting efforts to ultimately benefit the general public. Each member of the Shadowserver team, as volunteers, have dedicated themselves fully to this effort, almost to the point of it being a second full-time job. We are all proud of what we have accomplished over our brief history, and we look forward to continuing our efforts in the future.
